This is a selection of papers presented at the international conference ("Marcus Garvey: His Work and Impact") hosted by the University of West Indies from 3 to 5 November 1987 to mark the centenary of the birth of Marcus Garvey. The objectives of the conference were : first, to assess and evaluate current scholarship on the life, work and impact of Marcus Garvey, second, to examine the issues of race, Garveyism and Pan-Africanism in light of contemporary reality; third, to enable scholars to meet and exchange ideas with a view to encouraging research and publications on the above; fourth, to be a stepping stone for the teaching of Garvey and Garveyism in schools.
